Nigerian Family Income Documents for Italian Student Grants

An Italian university student whose family lives and earns income in Nigeria may be asked to prove the household's economic circumstances when applying for a grant, housing benefit or reduced-fee scheme. This can involve more than a single “family income declaration”. Depending on the scheme, the institution may need evidence of family composition, employment, income, bank balances, property and any absence of assets.
This guide uses the published rules of ER.GO, the regional student-benefits agency in Emilia-Romagna, as a concrete example. Other universities, regions and academic years have their own procedures. Do not treat an ER.GO requirement as a universal national scholarship rule. Last fact-check: 3 November 2026.
Why Nigerian family income matters for an Italian grant
Italian means-tested student support often considers the economic situation of a student's family unit, not only the money the student personally has in an Italian bank account. A student may need to document family circumstances abroad even if the student currently lives in Italy.
ER.GO explains that international students with income or assets outside Italy must obtain documents from the competent authorities in the country where the income is earned and the assets are held. The documents generally need translation and legalisation under the relevant rules.
Some students must submit an ISEE for university benefits; others follow ER.GO's specific route for foreign income and assets. The scheme, student's residence and household situation affect which route applies.
Three groups of information to prepare
1. Household composition
The receiving agency may require a formal stato di famiglia or equivalent official record identifying the family unit. It is not simply a list of relatives typed into a letter. Ask what authority can certify the household's composition and which relatives must be included under that scheme's rules.
A household in Nigeria with adult siblings, divorced parents or dependants may require careful explanation. Do not exclude household members merely because they currently have no income.
2. Income and employment
ER.GO instructs applicants to document the employment or occupational status of adult family members. The supporting documents vary by person and local availability. They may include officially issued income evidence, employment records or competent-authority certificates confirming the absence of employment or income.
A private declaration stating “no income” is not automatically equivalent to a document issued by a competent authority. Ask the scholarship office exactly what evidence it accepts where Nigerian formal tax or employment documents are unavailable.
3. Movable and immovable assets
Family assets may include bank accounts, savings, property and land. ER.GO distinguishes patrimonio mobiliare (movable assets) from patrimonio immobiliare (real estate). A student with no income might still have reportable assets.
Get the required valuation reference dates and the definition of household assets from the current grant instructions. Do not conceal a property because it is not generating rent.

Which year do the documents need to cover?
This is an easy point to miss. ER.GO's international-student guidance says complete evidence must be issued by competent authorities during the application year, and must report income for the preceding calendar year and assets held on 31 December of the preceding year.
Those dates are ER.GO's published approach. The exact academic-year call for applications determines the relevant period and submission deadline. Reusing last year's certificates without checking can invalidate a submission even if a family's financial situation has not changed.
Check the current instructions early enough to request documents from Nigeria before a scholarship deadline.
What if your family has income in both Nigeria and Italy?
ER.GO has a separate pathway for international students with income or assets in both Italy and abroad. It explains that some information appears in the Italian ISEE or DSU documentation, while the foreign-income documents must still be provided for the relevant assets and income.
Do not assume that your Italian employment income is the only amount the scheme will consider. Likewise, do not copy another student's ISEE result: the family situation and documentation route may differ.

Translation and legalisation: the Nigerian document route
ER.GO generally asks for translation and legalisation of foreign-issued documents. Its instructions say the documents should come from the authority competent in the territory where the relevant facts occurred.
For Nigerian public documents destined for use in Italy, the Italian Embassy in Abuja explains that an original usually needs authentication by the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs before Italian consular legalisation. Its jurisdiction covers FCT, Kaduna, Kano, Niger, Plateau and Katsina; the Consulate General in Lagos covers other Nigerian states.
However, the scholarship office determines which evidence it accepts, and certain documents may have different documentary routes. Verify the exact requirement before paying for translation or shipping originals.
Our document-legalisation preparation information can help you organise questions, but neither Liberty Digital nor a translator decides a scholarship award.
How to avoid preventable rejection
- Read the current academic-year call, not a previous year's blog post.
- Ask whether the scheme needs foreign-income papers, an ISEE for university benefits or both.
- Obtain documents for every relevant adult household member.
- Include official evidence for zero-income or no-assets claims when required.
- Match names and family relationships across the records.
- Check translation and legalisation before sending original documents abroad.
- Retain copies and submission acknowledgments, and follow the agency's secure upload channel.
If a Nigerian birth record is also part of your file, our NPC birth-record guide for Italy explains why document categories and legalisation rules cannot be assumed from a different application process.
Frequently asked questions
Is one family-income affidavit enough for an Italian scholarship?
Not necessarily. ER.GO describes separate evidence for household composition, employment or income, and assets. Each programme decides what is acceptable.
What does ISEE mean for a Nigerian student?
ISEE is the Italian indicator used to assess household economic circumstances for certain benefits. Students with foreign income may have additional evidence or a different processing route.
Can I reuse last year's income records?
Do not assume so. ER.GO instructs applicants to obtain documents for each academic-year application that match the specified reference period and deadline.
Does Liberty Digital issue an official scholarship-income certificate?
No. We offer independent help organising document requests. The competent Nigerian authority issues records, and the Italian agency decides eligibility.
